Aruba
Aruba is a rather curious place a tropical haven complete with breathtaking scenery and golden beaches, but with chic resorts that brandish all the glitz and glamour of a major American city. Luxury hotels line the sun kissed shores of Eagle and Palm beaches, where themed restaurants and grand casinos are at the centre of attention, but just beyond the beaten path lies a romantic and captivating Caribbean paradise.
Aruba boasts some of the finest sandy beaches of any Caribbean island. Long stretches of white sand lie next to the resorts, offering a wide range of water sports and excellent facilities, while more remote shores can be discovered in the outlying areas. The locals tend to visit the spectacular half-moon cove of Baby Beach, which is more secluded and peaceful. These shores are the perfect place to bask in the warmth of the Caribbean sun, while being gently cooled by the refreshing breeze from the trade winds.
There are plenty of opportunities for adventure on the island too, particularly when it comes to underwater exploration. There are 42 major dive sites around Aruba that encompass magnificent coral formations, like the stunning Natural Bridge and mysterious Second World War wrecks. Those who would prefer to remain dry can take in the underwater beauty by submarine or glass-bottomed boat.
Nightlife in Aruba generally consists of an eclectic array of cabarets shows, cocktail bars and wonderful restaurants serving local and international cuisine. For those feeling lucky, there are numerous glitzy casinos, some of which stay open all night.
The island’s capital of Oranjestad is a striking town, where louche boutiques and a pretty harbour-side market cater for the most avid of shoppers. A favourite stop for cruise ships, the retail outlets stock standard tourist fare as well as some traditional island jewellery and handicrafts.
Nowhere is the natural of the island more spectacular than at Arikok National Park, where the lush vegetation and dramatic landscapes play host to fascinating wildlife.
