Barbados
Barbados has something for everyone whether you’re seeking soft beaches, powerful surf, refined sophistication or the up-tempo, festive feel- this may very well be the place for you.
With the Caribbean Sea on its west side and the Atlantic Ocean at its eastern end- Barbados has the grace of two oceans- where smaller hotels and legions of windsurfers await.
Barbados’ biggest attraction is perhaps its white sandy stretches of beach that leads into crystal clear blue seas- ideal for snorkelling and diving. The island’s laid-back nature, or Calypso Culture has made it the place to hit for an idyllic break away.
The natural side to Barbados is astonishing to say the least- do not leave without taking a tram ride through Harrison’s Cave to view the stalactites, stalagmites, waterfalls and pools. Alternatively, or in addition- depending on your timetable, enjoy a relaxing stroll through the Andromeda Gardens, or even tee off at one of three fully equipped golf courses!
Come sunset, expect to witness hoards of fire-eaters and street dancers entertaining the masses over free rum and BBQ food. Barbados is party central during peak season with its many nightclubs, bars and Twilight boat cruises set on keeping you up and going into the wee hours.
In terms of shopping Barbados is a bargain hunters dream with Broad Street in Bridgetown, the island’s capital city, home to several large department stores and duty-free shops offering prices that can be 20% to 40% lower than those back home. Antiques can also be sourced quite easily at the Sunbury Plantation House-, which dates from 1660.
There are also plenty of famous attractions such as Millionaires’ Playground (a.k.a. Platinum Coast) and Crop Over (Barbados’ premier festival that celebrates the end of the sugar season)- which lasts for five weeks and includes markets, carnival shows, calypso concerts and colourful parades.
