The Dominican Republic, located in the northern Caribbean is a mass of diverse and spectacular landscape. With everything from tropical rainforests and alpine ranges to mangrove swamps and stretches of desert, there is a wealth of sights to see and things to do.
Christopher Columbus discovered the island on his first voyage in 1492. The capital, Santo Domingo, became his home and his remains can be found there today. A historical legacy is waiting to be discovered in this ancient city, where the first hospital, church, Cathedral & university in the Americas were founded. The Zona Colonial, features the Nicolas de Ovando, which was the original governors mansion. Santo Domingo also offers a vibrant nightlife with night entertainment peaking at the weekends.p
The Dominican Alps can be found north of the capital and feature the highest peak in the Caribbean, at over 10,000 feet. Jarabacoa, the main town in the area is a spectacular location for outdoor adventure sports. Hiking, mountain biking, white water rafting and abseiling down waterfalls are just some of the activities on offer.
Puerto Plata is a magnificent Victorian town located on the north shore of the island. The highest mountain in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte, which is over 10,000 ft high, is close to this town. The mountains provide great sporting opportunities including quad biking, white water rafting, abseiling and much more.
Cabarete, on the north coast, has held the world kite surfing championships and is a hive of activity with a whole host of beach bars. There are many options for families including swimming with dolphins, golf and spas to unwind in.
Punta Cana is a haven for sun worshippers with a magnificent stretch of unspoilt beaches. Miles of big, peaceful beaches make this town a slice of paradise. There is also a host of activities to choose from including jungle safaris, helicopter tours, desert island picnics and more.
