When you take a look at the international resort of Cancun- you’ll find it hard to believe that this bustling destination was  nothing more than a small fishing village around thirty years ago

Famed for its white sandy beaches- Cancun lures its tourists with promises of crystal clear water and gorgeous Caribbean sun.

There are ancient Mayan ruins to be observed, as well as sedate colonial towns- although you may get distracted by the huge choice in bars and restaurants on offer.

The downtown district is where you will find the city in it’s element- this is where most of Cancun’s population resides so it makes sense that you would find most of the amenities, including shops and stores- stacked along this lively quarter.

Cancun can perhaps be divided into two main areas the Hotel Zone and Mainland Cancun. The former was completely purpose built for tourists- with the main objective being to present the perfect holiday get-away equipped with a natural tropical setting as well as 21st century comforts. There is also a gorgeous lagoon in this area that facilitates every type of watersports imaginable!

The Mainland, however, has more of a traditional feel- there are markets instead of malls and quaint, open-air caf&eacutes in place of high-end restaurants. You won’t see as much glitz in this district- but you will perhaps find it more telling of Mexico and in turn more interesting.

There is a huge variety of nightlife on the island- particularly if you plan to frequent the hotel zone where most clubs go on till the early hours. There is also an extremely popular Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Café- not to mention the dozens of live-music bars, comedy acts and even romantic dinner cruises on offer after sundown.

Holidays and fiestas will always see Cancun erupt into all night long celebratory partying- so make sure to coordinate your stay with the highly revered occasions.

Things to do

Xcaret
This ecologically themed water park was once a peaceful cove. It now houses a dolphin swimming area, underground river, lagoon and bird sanctuary. Not to mention the museum, several different scenic outlook points, beaches and restaurants. You could really get lost in this amazing park! It comes alive at night time too- with several guided tours of the caves on offer as well as many cultural shows to be seen.

Avenida Tulum
This is perhaps the perfect place in Cancun to enjoys a leisurely stroll through the shops and restaurants that this Mexican island has on tap. You will find beautiful street art on display too- offering a unique, and free, insight into Mexican culture and artistic practice.

Island hop to Isla Holbox
If you want a brief respite from the frenzy of Cancun, then why not hop on over to the Isla Holbox for the day. This small island is only 16 miles long, located just north of Cancun. It’s a paradise for beach lovers and perfect for sunny days where all you want to do is lie on the beach and think about nothing. Interestingly there are no paved streets on this island- so you can spend the day jetting around on rented scooters instead-  perfect for taking in this tranquil and sedate resting place.

Cancun Museum
Discover the Mayan culture with this museums impressive collection of 1,000 to 1,500-year-old artifacts. Located on the ground floor of the city’s convention centre- there are numerous impressive carvings and frescoes to be observed along the way.
